Extensive research has proven that direct access maintains a high standard of patient safety.
Analyses of physiotherapy liability insurance claims indicate no change in claims data between patients with direct access and patients requiring a physician referral to NHS physiotherapy services. These analyses have also demonstrated that there is no increase in complaints between direct access and NHS physiotherapy.
Physiotherapists are trained to identify when a patient’s signs and symptoms potentially lie outside the scope of their diagnosis and require a referral to a physician for further tests.
Even when a specific diagnosis has been provided by a referring physician, the physiotherapist is responsible for validating that patient symptoms are consistent with the diagnosis provided and that the diagnosis or symptomatology has not changed substantially since the patient was last seen by their doctor.
most GP referrals are written as “evaluate and treat.” Even if a specific medical diagnosis is provided along with an “evaluate and treat” referral, it is the physiotherapist’s responsibility to identify the rehabilitation diagnosis in order to secure recovery and reimbursement.
