What are the Causes of Knee Pain?

Knee pain is a common problem that can affect anyone, regardless of age. It can come from many sources.

The usual suspects are osteoarthritis, which is wear and tear of the joint cartilage, especially in older adults.

Injuries to the knee structure, such as ligament sprains, meniscus tears, or fractures, can happen during sports or sudden twisting movements.

Overuse conditions like patellar tendinitis can develop from repetitive activities, especially in runners and cyclists.

Inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis can cause joint inflammation and cartilage destruction. Biomechanical issues like being overweight or poor alignment can put stress on the knee joint.

Other causes of knee pain are bursitis, iliotibial band syndrome and dislocated kneecaps.

What Treatments Can We Provide to Help Knee Pain

At PhysioDirect we have a variety of treatments to help with knee pain, each tailored to you.

Manual therapy techniques such as joint mobilisation and soft tissue massage can help with flexibility and pain.

Exercise is a big part of treatment, with targeted strengthening of the muscles around the knee and stretching to increase flexibility. We may also use modalities like ultrasound or electrical stimulation to reduce pain and promote healing.

A treatment plan will usually include a combination of these and education on movement patterns and ergonomics.

Taping or bracing may be used in some cases. Physiotherapy for knee pain aims to reduce pain and increase mobility and function so that patients can return to daily activities with more ease and confidence.
